The transfer partner playbook: turning points into first class

Flexible points are only as good as the partners you move them to. A simple framework to pick the right programme every time.

Flexible points are powerful because they are not locked into one airline. Card issuers and banks let you move them to a list of airline and hotel partners. Used well, that flexibility is the difference between a decent economy ticket and a first class suite.

Why partners matter more than the airline you fly

Airlines in the same alliance sell seats to each other's members. That means you can often book a flight on one airline using miles from a completely different programme, and pay fewer miles or lower surcharges. The airline you sit on and the programme you book with do not have to be the same.

A four-step framework

  1. Search first. Find award space for your dates on the airline you want to fly.
  2. List every programme that can book it. Check which alliance partners sell that seat.
  3. Compare the real price. Look at the miles needed and the cash part: taxes, fees and fuel surcharges.
  4. Transfer only what you need, then book immediately. Seats can disappear while points are moving.

Watch for transfer bonuses

Several times a year, banks run bonuses that give you extra miles when you transfer to a specific partner, often 20% to 40% more. If your trip is not urgent and the partner suits your route, waiting for a bonus can save thousands of points.

Common mistakes

  • Transferring on speculation. Points in an airline account usually cannot be moved back.
  • Ignoring surcharges. A low miles price with high fees can cost more than a higher miles price with low fees.
  • Forgetting transfer times. Most transfers are instant or take a day, but some take longer. Check before you rely on it.
  • Letting points expire. Some airline programmes expire miles after a period without activity.

Where to begin

Write down the two or three routes you fly most. For each, note which alliances fly it and which of your bank's partners belong to those alliances. That short list is your personal sweet spot map, and you will use it again and again.
